After discussion with @wojtek we came up with the conclusion that while PNG is required, it is possible to upload JPEG as well and both of them do not need to be of the same size. With that in mind, it is possible to upload both versions, where PNG would be the last on the list of |

After initial testing, it looks like the payload with the PNG format required for XEP-0084 is too big for ejabberd. While it works ok with other servers, it would be good to reduce the size of the avatar image uploaded to the server to reduce traffic and improve compatibility.
