New users are greeted with a blank white screen with no instructions. For new users they might be confused and think the application is broken. Recommend adding some tips, either in UI background or popups to guide through new user installation.

Well spotted. Daniel, please provide some more suggestions. Example greeting text, content of the screen, etc...

I guess, initial set of users will be people who know something about XMPP, so they will know, more or less how to use it. But if we want to get wider audience, we need provide some guidance.

It was already implemented in #4579 and was working fine.

A few questions:

Which device do you use for testing?

Was it clean install or have you just removed all accounts?

Daniel Wisnewski commented 7 years ago

Working on Apple iPad mini, I had old accounts (although it was disabled when I turned on the program). With a uninstall/reinstall the same stll shows with a blank tab to the left side with just a plus at the top right, bottom contents are Recent, Contact, and most viewed which should be named Options/accounts.

I have not seen a welcome screen on the iPad mini. I will test on the iphone tonight, as well as upgrade to iOS 10 to confirm it's not device related.

Daniel, welcome screen is available only where there is no account defined. If at least one is defined (even if it is disabled) then screen will not appear.

I've check this on iPad and iPhone simulators and welcome screen appeared as it should.

After figuring out how to remove accounts, this now shows with no accounts defined inside the application. However one question, is there any difference between create new and use existing? With create new(I assume new XMPP account), does this login to server and register new account using in-band registration? If so, there should be some text saying that is the case (since not all servers support that).

Andrzej Wójcik (Tigase) commented 7 years ago

Yes, you are correct. Create new XMPP account uses in-band registration to create new XMPP account on a XMPP server while Sign in to an existing XMPP account allows you to use account which already exists on a server.

For sure I can add some description and improve this UI but please give me some hints (ie. some mockup image with places for for text and exact text which you would like me to present in this places).

However in this case user needs to provide server name to which he wants to register, so he knows this server (at least name) and most likely is aware if server supports in-band registration or not. And even if someone would try to register account on server which do not support this feature, he will receive an error.
