OK, I'm kinda blind and assumed that "Custom message" was only once on the list (message being disjointed with the status itself as usually done).

Could those "Custom message" items have indentation to make them more distinct? Or use single/global message item. (though I assume it's done as is to make sure that the current message is actually for the particular status?)

Yes, that is why it is done this way. And... in my opinion, people no longer care about the status message. Most of the just use defaults and that is it, so I was not really focused on this UX.
